4 EMME: a history of courage and innovation

The story of 4 EMME is one of bold but common people. Like many in the Italian industrial landscape, it is a narrative filled with twists and turns, setbacks, triumphs, and a fair share of luck. To fully understand it, one must weave together historical, social, and economic elements, crafting a tale that not only outlines the evolution of 4 EMME but also the context in which it has flourished.

Origins: Post-War Italian economic expansion

1950. Italy is in the midst of reconstruction and economic recovery. In the province of Padua, the predominantly agricultural economy is making way for the development of light metal industry, which during the economic boom of the 1950s and 1960s, will lead to increased industrialization and urbanization. In this context, a young man named Ercole Mattiazzi, father of Giampaolo and Aldo, and grandfather of Marta and Massimo, decides to get his carpentry licence.

Every day, Ercole rides his bike through a lush yet impoverished plain, dotted with traditional farmhouses (casoni) topped with straw roofs. He bikes for 40 kilometres along a dusty white road in the summer and a damp, foggy one in the winter to get from Conche to Padua.

He knew he would soon open his first workshop, but he could never have imagined that his children and later his grandchildren would turn that small craft endeavour into a significant industrial enterprise.

The birth of C.ar.met. in a field of utter transformation

Since 1950, the sheet metal processing industry has evolved from manual techniques to highly automated and digital technologies. This shift has resulted in significant improvements in efficiency, precision, and safety, making the sector one of the most advanced in manufacturing.

In 1977, Ercole’s sons, Giampaolo and Aldo, inspired by their childhood spent in their father’s workshop, established C.ar.met. snc, focusing on light carpentry. Capitalizing on the market demands in the northeast, C.ar.met. specialized in supplying parts for air treatment and air-conditioned machinery, establishing partnerships with some of the largest local companies of the industry.

Next generation, innovation and a new vision: here comes 4 EMME

The year 2000, with Marta and Massimo, Giampaolo’s children, joining forces, marked the birth of 4 EMME. This opened up new horizons and challenges, including the launch of the first self-produced line of rack cabinets. A decade later, 4 EMME acquired C.ar.met., leveraging its tools and expertise to provide third-parties manufacturing for major Italian companies.

By 2010, 4 EMME had grown to include 50 specialized operators in departments such as bending (with the introduction of the first anthropomorphic robot), cutting, punching, welding, painting, and assembly. The company produced a line of 10 rack cabinets with various functionalities and features, tailored to different sectors: industrial, pharmaceutical, electrical, and residential.

Expansion and Sustainability

In 2015, 4 EMME broadened its horizons by establishing international business relationships and introducing its first fiber laser cutting machine. In the following years, the company increasingly focused on subcontracting, setting up a quality control department and adopting a Lean Production system.

The expansion of production space and the automation of departments prompted a forward-looking approach, emphasizing social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Hence, the first sustainability report published in 2021.

An ongoing tradition

The journey of 4 EMME exemplifies how courage, innovation, and dedication can turn a small artisanal dream into a thriving industrial reality.

Throughout generations, the Mattiazzi family has shown that with determination and vision, extraordinary achievements are possible, contributing to the economic and social advancement of their community.

The 4 EMME’s logo has a rich symbol of history.

The bow iron of the gondola is much more than just a functional part of the Venetian boat.

It embodies the history, culture, and artistry of Venice. It reflects the craftsmanship of Venetian artisans, the city’s connection to the sea, and its intricate administrative and social structure. Each detail of the bow iron narrates a piece of Venice’s rich history, making it an essential and captivating aspect of the city’s cultural heritage.

For 4 EMME, this symbol today represents our values, our choices, and our skills as well as our commitment to customers, people, and environment.
